What type of media should I choose?
Black and White
Charcoal
The rich velvety black quality of charcoal makes it one of the boldest
and most evocative mediums. Charcoal is particularly prized for the ease
with which it can produce a wide range of darks and lights and varying
texture. Drawings are sprayed with fixative when completed, to prevent
smudging. Framing behind glass is recommended to preserve the detail of
the drawing.
Pencil
Pencils are the simplest and most immediate of drawing media, capable
of expressing a versatile range of strong or sensitive marks. Pencil drawings
allow for greater detail than charcoal, and do not smudge as easily. Silver
point ~ Silver point is a beautiful medium popular in Renaissance times.
Its basic principal is the creation of a drawing using a piece of pure
silver, on paper pre-prepared with Chinese white watercolor paint. The
resulting drawing has a metallic shimmer, which over time will tarnish
when left to the air creating a beautiful antique finish.
Color
Colored Pencil
A relatively new media, colored pencils cannot be blended. The appearance
of blending is accomplished by the building of lines into color layers,
and textures. The waxy nature of colored pencils allow them to retain
their own distinct colors when drawn over each other.
Watercolor paintings
Watercolor is unique for its transparent light effects. It mixes well
with pen and ink drawings, increasing the 3-dimensional quality of form
in a subtle way. Water color paintings are done on heavy paper, specially
made with a texture to support the medium, and can be framed in a regular
glass frame. Paintings can be matted upon request, please specify color.
Acrylic Painting
Acrylic paintings are generally done on canvas, and are very versatile.
They can be diluted to produce an effect strikingly like that of watercolors,
or used more opaquely to produce vibrant colors of a photograph. Paint
is insoluble to water when dry. Acrylic painting can be done on nearly
any surface including: Wood, canvas, canvas paper, slate, etc.
